BIMSTEC or Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sector Technical and Economic Cooperation is an international organization of seven south Asian countries.
• These seven countries are- Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Nepal and Bhutan. These are countries surrounding the Bay of Bengal.
• It was formed in 1997. The organization has targeted fourteen priority sectors of cooperation.
• Its secretariat is located in Dhaka, Bangladesh and Tenzin Lekphell of Bhutan is its present Secretary-General.
• There are 14 main sectors of BIMSTEC along with technological and economic cooperation among South Asian country members.
• Out of these 14 sectors, India leads four sectors-
o Transport and Communication
o Tourism
o Counterterrorism and Transnational Crime
o Environment and disaster management
