15 kg mixture of iron and manganese has 35% of manganese. How much iron should be added so that the proportion of manganese becomes 25%?

    Solutions

Applying alligation on % of manganese:

    Ratio of initial mixture and iron added = 25 : 10 = 5 : 2

What should come in place of the question mark '?' in the following question?

    (1053 + 2512 – 622) ÷ 9 = ?

    Solutions

    ? = (1053 + 2512 – 622) ÷ 9

    = (3565 – 622) ÷ 9

    = 2943 ÷ 9

    = 327

A cylinder is melted and shaped into a sphere of similar radius. Find the ratio of the total surface area of cylinder and sphere.

    Solutions

    Due to melting

Vol of Cylinder = Vol of Sphere

    pi * r2* h = 4/3 * pi * r3

    h=4r/3

    Ratio of surface area:-

    (2 * pi * r *(r+ h))/(4*pi*r) =(r+h)/2r = (4r/3 + r)/2r = 7/6

A water bottle is marked at price Rs. 920 but the seller agrees to give him two successive discounts. He got the bottle for Rs. 703.8. If the first discount rate was 10%, what was the second discount rate?

    Solutions

Let the second discount rate = r

    ⇒ 100 – r = 85

    ⇒ r = 15%

    Directions For Questions

Direction: Study the following data carefully and answer the questions accordingly.

Eight people P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, and W went on a trip in eight different months from January to August in the same year but not necessarily in the same order. One person goes on a trip in one month. Three people went on a trip between V and T. Five people went on a trip between T and W. P went on a trip in a month adjacent to W but not adjacent to V. Four people went on a trip between R and P.  U went on a trip before R but not immediately. Q went on a trip after S.

If a boat can go a certain distance distance upstream and downstream in 5 and 3 hours respectively. Find that ratio of speed upstream to speed downstream.

    Solutions

    Let the distance be D.

    Speed upstream = D/5

    Speed downstream = D/3

    Ratio of speed upstream to speed downstream = D/5 : D/3 = 3 : 5

A train crosses a pillar in 9 seconds and a 300 m long platform in 19 seconds. What is the length of train?

    Solutions

Let the L and v be the length and speed of train respectively.

From (1) and (2) we get:

    19v – 300 = 9v

    ⇒ 10v = 300 ⇒ v = 30

    Length of train = 30 × 9 = 270 m

Three pipes can fill a tank in 30 minutes. The speed of pipes are in ratio 1:2:4. If the two pipes, the one with the least speed and the highest speed are turned on but the one with the middle speed is turned off then how long will it take for the pipes to fill the tank?

    Solutions

Let the speeds be x, 2x and 4x

Let there be a single pipe with speed equal to 3 pipes

    Then the speed of that pipe = x + 2x + 4x = 7x

If a pipe with a speed of 7x fills a tank in 30 minutes

Pipe with speed x will fill the tank in 30*7 = 210minutes

    Pipe with speed x + 4x = 5x will fill the tank in 30*7 / 5 = 210/5 minutes=42 minutes.
