Read the following passage and answer the items that follow. Your answer to these items should be based on the passages only.

The proposed Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020, have been drafted ostensibly in the name of the consumer. But the welfare of the consumer seems to be an afterthought. The rules are driven more by the desire to shield the traditional brick-and-mortar stores, and handicap e-commerce firms, especially the foreign ones. They seek to deepen, not paper over, existing fault lines. Take, for instance, the fall-back liability clause. Under this provision, e-commerce entities will be liable in case suppliers on the platform fail to deliver the goods to consumers, causing them a loss.

Which of the following assumption is valid from the given passage?

    Solutions

The correct answer is Brick and mortar stores were facing issues with the e-commerce firms.

    Key Points

    • From the passage, '...The rules are driven more by the desire to shield the traditional brick-and-mortar stores, and handicap e-commerce firms, especially the foreign ones....'
    • We can assume that the e-commerce companies have been hampering the business of brick-and-mortar stores.
    • Hence option 2 is a valid assumption.
    • Option 1 this cannot be assumed as the passage doesn't  hint at the unfair selling methods that have been used
    • Option 3 cannot be a valid assumption either, we cannot assume how the rules are going to affect the competition.

Therefore the correct answer is Brick and mortar stores were facing issues with the e-commerce firms.

Read the following passage and answer the items that follow. Your answer to these items should be based on the passages only.

In the Indian police force, the lower ranks of police personnel are often verbally abused by their superiors. Many are not considered as individuals, are not shown compassion by the senior ranks, and work in inhuman conditions. While the alleged excesses of the police cannot be justified, it is important to look at how the treatment meted to police constables has affected the interaction of the police with the public. Many policemen deal with citizens in the manner that they do only because their work environments are not harmonious. Their relationship with their superior officers is stressful and sycophantic.

There is no concept of welfare and this manifests in their improper behaviour with the citizenry. Several committees have made several recommendations on the issue of reforms for a healthy police system. The Supreme Court of India was forced to intervene as neither the Central government nor the State governments acted upon those recommendations. It is clear that the problem is with the political apparatus considering the history of the Police Act.

On the basis of the above passage, the following assumptions have been made:

    1. There was a need for a healthy police system

    2. Lower rank police personnel are often being treated badly

Which of the above assumptions is/are valid?

    Solutions

The correct answer is Both 1 and 2.

    Key Points

    • Statement 1 can be assumed from the given passage.
      • As given in the passage, '...Several committees have made several recommendations on the issue of reforms for a healthy police system...'
      • This gives a hint that there were several committees been formed because there was a need for a healthy police system.
    • Statement 2 is also a valid assumption.
      • From the first paragraph, it is clear that there exists an abusive environment in the police system for the low-rank police personnel.

Hence the correct answer is Both 1 and 2.

    Directions For Questions

Read the following passage and answer the items that follow. Your answer to these items should be based on the passages only.

The drawing down of tensions between Assam and Mizoram, at least at the leadership level, with the respective governments announcing the withdrawal of FIRs against the Chief Minister of Assam and a Rajya Sabha MP from Mizoram, among other steps, comes as a great relief. These actions followed the deaths of six policemen and a civilian from Assam in a violent gunfight in the border town of Vairengte in Mizoram on July 26, which exacerbated an already fraught situation between the States.

The retaliatory actions such as filing FIRs against prominent representatives, at a time when locals in the Barak Valley in Assam had already imposed a blockade, disallowing trucks with essential goods from entering Mizoram, seemed to indicate that the States’ leaderships were throwing away their scabbards, militating against their own moves to restore calm.

Which of the following assumptions is valid?

    Solutions

The correct answer is There exists a border dispute between Assam and Mizoram.

    Key Points

    • Option 2 is a valid assumption, from the passage it is evident that there was a clash between the police personnel along the borderline which implies that there exists a borderline dispute.
    • Even as given in the passage, '...These actions followed the deaths of six policemen and a civilian from Assam in a violent gunfight in the border town of Vairengte in Mizoram on July 26, which exacerbated an already fraught situation between the States...' gives hint on the border dispute.
    • Option 1 is one of the general statements given in the passage.
    • Option 3 is not true as given in the first line of the passage, there have been signs of reduced tension between Assam and Mizoram states.
    • Option 4 cannot be an assumption, from the given passage we can say that tension between the states have reduced but not completely.

Hence the correct answer is There exists a border dispute between Assam and Mizoram.

    Additional Information

    • Militate: (of a fact or circumstance) be a powerful or conclusive factor in preventing.
    • Scabbards: A sheath for the blade of a sword or dagger, typically made of leather or metal.

    Directions For Questions

Read the following passage and answer the items that follow. Your answer to these items should be based on the passages only.

Employers and contractors collude to keep workers in perpetual precarity to protect themselves against losses caused by shocks such as Covid. Control over workers belonging to marginalised communities is exercised through class, caste and gender hierarchies. Pankhuri Agarwal, a researcher supporting the Working People’s Charter work with interstate migrants in Delhi, mentioned that migrants experienced a variety of problems with registration ranging from digital illiteracy, corruption, bureaucratic inefficiency and the requirement of multiple documents (even where only Aadhaar would suffice). Exclusion was markedly worse among the lower castes who were not treated with dignity by state functionaries.

Finally, the governance dimension needs much more serious consideration. Already, there are indications that coordination between state labour departments has been problematic. While we do have some understanding of the everyday interactions between the state and migrant subjects, we do not know enough about the inner workings of the government machinery and how this shapes outcomes for migrants.

Which of the following assumptions is/are valid?

    1. There is a systematic mechanism to keep control over workers including the migrant workers.

    2. State labour departments are providing a proper channel to minimize the hurdles faced by the workers.

    Solutions

The correct answer is 1 only.

    Key Points

    • Statement 1: From the given passage '...Employers and contractors collude to keep workers in perpetual precarity to protect themselves against losses caused by shocks such as Covid. Control over workers belonging to marginalised communities is exercised through class, caste and gender hierarchies...'
    • From which we can assume that there exists a systematic mechanism to keep control over the workers even including the migrant workers. Pushing the workers to be dependent on the employers or workers.
    • Hence statement 1 is a valid assumption
    • Statement 2: From the given passage '...Finally, the governance dimension needs much more serious consideration. Already, there are indications that coordination between state labour departments has been problematic. While we do have some understanding of the everyday interactions between the state and migrant subjects, we do not know enough about the inner workings of the government machinery and how this shapes outcomes for migrants. ...'
    • This indicates that there is no enough evidence for the government haveing proper channels to deal with issues of workers.

Therefore the correct answer is 1 only.

    Directions For Questions

Read the following passage and answer the items that follow. Your answer to these items should be based on the passages only.

In 2014, the Ministry of Home Affairs told Parliament that nine central agencies and the DGPs of all States and Delhi were empowered to conduct interception under the Indian Telegraph Act. In 2018, nine central agencies and one State agency were authorised to conduct intercepts under Section 69 of the IT Act. Yet, the Intelligence Organisations Act, which restricts the civil liberties of intelligence agency employees, only lists four agencies, while the RTI Act lists 22 agencies as “intelligence and security organisations established by the central government” that are exempt from the RTI Act. Thus, it is unclear which entities count as intelligence and security agencies.

Further, a surveillance alphabet soup exists, with programmes such as CMS, TCIS, NETRA, CCTNS, and so on, none of which has been authorised by any statute, and thus fall short of the 2017 K.S. Puttaswamy judgment, which made it clear that any invasion of privacy could only be justified if it satisfied three tests: first, the restriction must be by law; second, it must be necessary (only if other means are not available) and proportionate (only as much as needed); and third, it must promote a legitimate state interest (e.g., national security).

The following assumptions have been made from the given passage:

    1. A limited number of agencies are provided power to intercept and monitor.

    2. There is a need for a clear demarcation between intelligence and security agencies.

which of the above assumptions is/are valid?

    Solutions

The correct answer is Both 1 and 2.

    Key Points

    • Statement 1 is a valid assumption, as given in the passage, not all the agencies are powered to intercept or monitor but few of them have only been provided with such power.
    • Statement 2 is also a valid assumption, In the passage '...“intelligence and security organisations established by the central government” that are exempt from the RTI Act. Thus, it is unclear which entities count as intelligence and security agencies...' we can assume that there is a need for a clear demarcation between intelligence and security agencies.

Therefore the correct answer is Both 1 and 2.

    Directions For Questions

Read the following passage and answer the items that follow. Your answer to these items should be based on the passages only.

The American philosopher Michael J. Sandel argued that under rising extreme inequalities of capitalism, there is a “skyboxification of American life”, in which the affluent classes and people of poor means have no connection at all, and they “live and work and shop and play in different places” and their “children go to different schools”. In India, this plays out differently not just in economic terms, but also in religion, and more starkly, caste, the fundamental divide. Every religion is riven by caste. Like with religion, 64% say that it is “very important” to prevent women from crossing caste boundaries in marriage, and 70% affirm that “most or all of their close friends share their caste”.

Again, the Survey brings to the fore the central contradiction of a democratic nation that is divided by compartmentalised hierarchies. Thus, it is vital to note that amidst the gathering clouds of majoritarianism, it is a minority of upper castes that holds the reins of power, across religions, and it is the lower castes among the religious minority that face the brunt of majoritarian attacks. Glossing over this reality, ironically, reinforces religious majoritarianism, and reduces conflicts to merely religion.

On the basis of the above passage, the following assumptions have been made:

    1. The compartmentalised hierarchies are detrimental to democratic values

    2. America is showing the sign of inequalities of capitalism as well as political.

Which of the above assumptions is/are valid?

    Solutions

The correct answer is 1 only.

    Key Points

    • Note: Assumption: A thing that is accepted as true or as certain to happen, without proof.
    • Statement 1 is a valid assumption.
      • in the passage '...Again, the Survey brings to the fore the central contradiction of a democratic nation that is divided by compartmentalised hierarchies...'
      • We can assume that compartmentalised hierarchies are detrimental to democratic values.
      • Further, the author explains the power inequalities that may arise due to the extreme nature of caste segregations.
    • Statement 2 is not a valid assumption.
      • The author has mentioned the view of Michael J. Sandel that there is a rise in extreme inequalities of capitalism.
      • But there is no mention of the political inequalities and this cannot be assumed from the given passage.

Hence the correct answer is 1 only.

    Directions For Questions

Read the following passage and answer the items that follow. Your answer to these items should be based on the passages only.

The Indian Constitution may face an unprecedented crisis in 2026 when there will be a dramatic change in the composition of the Lok Sabha. Since 1976, seats in the Lok Sabha have reflected the 1971 census and have not taken into account changes in the population. The primary reason for this has been unequal population growth among States. India’s most highly developed and prosperous States have been successful at family planning, while the poorer States continue to expand.

The freeze was thus a chance to ensure that India’s most successful States are not punished politically for their success. Post 2026, when this compact ends, there will be a seismic shift in national power towards India’s poorest and most populated States, which is sure to generate much resentment among the States that will lose political and economic power and influence. This calls for a realignment in the balance between the democratic principle and the federal principle in the Indian Constitution.

On the basis of the above passage, the following assumptions have been made:

    1. 2011 census can be taken into account for seats in the Lok Sabha.

    2. States may not be able to represent as per the proportion to their population

Which of the above assumptions is/are valid?

    Solutions

The correct answer is 2 only.

    Key Points

    • Statement 1: the given statement is out of context as there is no mention of the 2011 census anywhere in the passage.
    • Hence cannot be assumed from the given passage.
    • Statement 2: The given statement is a valid assumption, as the passage discusses the crisis that the Indian Consitution may face due to the unequal representation due to unequal population growth among states.
    • hence we can assume that Indian states may not be able to represent as per the proportion to their population.

Read the following passage and answer the items that follow. Your answer to these items should be based on the passages only.

The creation of a nationwide database of wanted persons, which could be accessible for police agencies, the public and others (like passport and immigration authorities), is imperative. The Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems and the National Intelligence Grid are efforts in the right direction, but more integration is desirable. Perhaps a nation-wide system of ‘Wanted Persons Notices’, similar to Interpol Notices, is required, to help track fugitives domestically. Countries like the U.S. have functional inter-State extradition and fugitive tracking systems; India needs to set up such dedicated ‘fugitive tracking units’. There needs to be enhanced integration between immigration agencies, State police agencies, Interpol-New Delhi, the External Affairs Ministry and Home Ministry and central investigation agencies. Intelligence agencies also need to pool in.

Which of the assumptions given below is/are valid?

    1. There is a need for a database of wanted persons

    2. There is a need for integration between the state and central investigation agencies

    Solutions

The correct answer is Both 1 and 2.

    Key Points

    • As the first sentence of the passage describes that 'The creation of a nationwide database of wanted persons, which could be accessible for police agencies, the public and others (like passport and immigration authorities), is imperative.'
    • We can assume that there is a need for a database of wanted persons.
    • Hence, statement 1 is a valid assumption.
    • And also the last sentence of the passage, 'There needs to be enhanced integration between immigration agencies, State police agencies, Interpol-New Delhi, the External Affairs Ministry and Home Ministry and central investigation agencies. Intelligence agencies also need to pool in.'
    • We can assume that there is a need for integration between the state and central investigation agencies.
    • Hence, statement 2 is a valid assumption.

Therefore, the correct answer is Both 1 and 2

    Directions For Questions

Read the following passage and answer the item that follows. Your answer to this item should be based on the passage only.

The coronavirus pandemic may have shrunk India’s middle-class population by 32 million and driven 75 million below the poverty line in 2020, a Pew Research Centre report said, as a severe recession walloped Asia’s third-largest economy. The report, which is based on an analysis of World Bank data, said that in comparison China fared much better, with the number of people in the middle-income tier decreasing by only 10 million, while the poverty level remained virtually unchanged in 2020.

The last time that ‘India reported an increase in poverty was in the first 25 years after Independence, when from 1951 to 1974, the population of the poor increased from 47% to 56%’. In India, there is now, rightly, a consensus difficult for the Government to beat down that to be able to battle COVID-19 and secure India from successive waves, the exact numbers of the dead must be carefully documented. Something else that needs equal attention, if the state of the decrepit Indian economy is to be repaired, is to be able to meticulously count the number of the poor and to prioritize them.

Which of the following assumptions made from the above passage is/are valid?

    1. Poverty is pronounced deprivation in well-being and comprises many dimensions.

    2. The novel coronavirus pandemic has resulted in the shrinking of the economy.

    Solutions
The correct answer is 2 only.
    Key Points
    • Note: Assumption: A thing that is accepted as true or as certain to happen, without proof.
    • Let’s examine each of the statements carefully:
    • Statement 1: Poverty is pronounced deprivation in well-being and comprises many dimensions.
      • This statement gives general information about poverty.
      • Hence, it cannot be an assumption of the given passage.
    • Statement 2: The novel coronavirus pandemic has resulted in the shrinking of the economy.
      • This statement is correct.
      • It has been mentioned in the given passage that the Indian economy has become "decrepit".
      • In India, with a share of almost 90 percent of people working in the informal economy, about 400 million workers in the informal economy are at risk of falling deeper into poverty during the crisis.
      • Hence, the novel coronavirus pandemic has resulted in the shrinking of the economy

Therefore, the correct answer is 2 only.

  • Question 10/10

    Directions For Questions

Read the following passage and answer the item that follows. Your answer to this item should be based on the passage only.

With increased economic insecurity, lack of social protection and reduced household income, the Covid-19 pandemic is pushing the children from poor households to contribute to the family income with the risk of exposure to exploitative work. Subsequent lockdowns have worsened the situation, posing a real risk of backtracking the gains made in eliminating child labour.

The true extent of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on child labour is yet to be measured but all indications show that it would be significant as children are unable to attend school and parents are unable to find work. However, not all the factors that contribute to child labour were created by the pandemic; most of them were pre-existing and have been exposed or amplified by it. Though the pandemic has amplified its contributing factors, policy and programmatic interventions can save children. The side-effects of working at a young age are: risks of contracting occupational diseases like skin diseases, diseases of the lungs, weak eyesight, TB etc., vulnerability to sexual exploitation at the workplace, deprived of education. They grow up unable to avail development opportunities and end up as unskilled workers for the rest of their lives.

Which of the following assumptions made from the above passage is/are valid?

    1. Child labour has a linkage with child trafficking.

    2. Children should be treated as active stakeholders.

    Solutions
The correct answer is 1 only.
    Key Points
    • Note: Assumption: A thing that is accepted as true or as certain to happen, without proof.
    • Let’s examine each of the statements carefully:
    • Statement 1: Child labour has a linkage with child trafficking.
      • This statement is correct.
      • Child trafficking is about taking children out of their protective environment and preying on their vulnerability for the purpose of exploitation.
      • It has been mentioned in the given passage that, "Child migrants are at a high risk of exploitation and vulnerable to child labour".
      • Many child migrants end up in agriculture or services such as domestic work. Some of them are victims of trafficking.
      • Hence, child labour has a linkage with child trafficking.
    • Statement 2: Children should be treated as active stakeholders.
      • This statement is out of context.
      • Hence, it cannot be an assumption of the given passage.

Therefore, the correct answer is 1 only.
