The houses in Jammu and Kashmir are made of stone and wood and walls are coated with a thick layer of mud and lime. The houses of mud and wood provide good insulation during cold weather. The ground floor has no windows and is used for animals and necessary things and wooden steps are made to reach the first floor, where people stay. Thick tree trunks are used to make the roof strong.
Houses with thick walls are predominant particularly in the western Rajasthan. The roof is made up of 'Kheep', the hard desert grass. And given a cone shape or are inclined to prevent water from entering inside. It also keep hut cool during summers. Most of the houses have flat roofs, because of the same reason of ease of availability of stones for roofs.
