    A and B can finish a work 30 days if they work together. They worked together for 20 days and then B left. A finished the remaining work in another 20 days. In how many days A alone can finish the work?
    Solutions
    Amount of work done by A and B in 1 day = 1/30
    Amount of work done by A and B in 20 days = 20 × (1/30) = 20/30 = 2/3
    Remaining work – 1 – 2/3 = 1/3
    A completes 1/3 work in 20 days
    Amount of work A can do in 1 day = (1/3)/20 = 1/60
    A can complete the work in 60 days
  • Question 8/12
    1 / -0

    Two people, A and B, can finish a work in 9 days and 18 days respectively. They start working together to complete the work in a scheduled time but B leaves 2 days before the scheduled completion of the work. In how many days will the total work be completed now?
    Solutions

    Alternative Method:
     Lcm of 9 , 18 = 18
    A does = 18/9 = 2 unit/day
    B does = 18/18 = 1 unit/days
    Total Work completed by both = 18/3 = 6 days.
    But B leave 2 days before the completion of the work.
    So A + B) 4 days work = 3 unit x 4 = 12 work then Remaining work = 6 which will be done by only A = 6/ 2  = 3 days
    Total Days = 4 days + 3 days = 7 days
    Detailed Methods:
    The work was scheduled to be completed in = 6 days. Since, B left 2 days before scheduled completion; He worked for 4 days only. Let the number of days A worked be ‘x’. Now, = 1. On Solving, we get x = 7 days.

    Or
    If we solve it using efficiency method.

    work done by A in 9 days = work done by B in 18 days
    Ax9 = Bx18
    A = 2B
    We can say that efficiency of A is two time of efficiency of B.
    Let efficiency of B is 1, then efficiency of A is 2.
    So, total work = 9 x2 or 18x1 = 18
    If they work together, total efficiency is 3
    So, scheduled time = 18/3 = 6 days,
    But B left 2 days before scheduled time. It means 2 days work of B will be done by A.
    work of 2 days of B = 2x1 = 2 unit
    2 unit of work can be done by A in 1 day.
    Hence, total time will be 7 days.

    Two posts are 4 m apart. Both posts are on same side of a tree. If the angles of depressions of these posts when observed from the top of the tree are 45o and 60o respectively, then what is the height of the tree?
    Solutions

    In triangle ABC
    Tan60 ° =
    X=h/√3
    In triangle ABD
    Tan45 ° =
    BD=AB
    4+x=h

    4√3 =√3h-h

    multiply numerator and denominator by √3+1
    then =2√3(√3+1 )
