In the following questions , a sentence has been given in Direct/Indirect . Out of the four alternatives suggested, select the one which best expresses the same sentence in Indirect/ Direct .

Interrogative sentences beginning with an auxiliary verb are changed into the indirect speech by using the connective 'if' or 'whether'.The reporting verb said (or any other word used as the reporting verb) changes to asked, queried, questioned, demanded of or enquired of in the indirect speech. Note that of is used after enquired and demanded only when the reporting verb has an object.
He says, “I am a little bit afraid.”

As in the given sentence, the reporting verb is in the past tense, the verb in the reported speech is changed into the corresponding past form. (a) Reporting verb is changed into ask or enquire of. (b) If or whether is used as a linking word. (c) The auxiliary verb in the reported speech is used after the subject.
Raj said, “I am happy to be here this evening.”
Raj said that he was happy to be there that evening. If the reporting verb is in the past tense, and the verb in the reported speech is in present indefinite than it is changed into the past indefinite. Also, The First Person of the direct speech is changed into the person the man spoken to.
The tutor said, “The sun rises in the East”.
When Direct Speech is converted into Indirect Speech the tense changes.Since the reported speech is Universal truth, it remains unchanged in the Indirect speech. Option 4 is the correctly framed sentence.
The principal said, “I want to meet her parents.”
When Direct Speech is converted into Indirect Speech – The reported speech in Simple Present tense is changed to Simple Past tense ‘I’ is converted to ‘he’. Thus option 3 has the correctly framed sentence.
