Qutb-ud-din Aibak was a sipahasalar under Muhammad Ghori as well as his slave and founder of slave dynasty. He was born to a Turkish family in Central Asia and was sold as a slave in his childhood. Iltutmish succeeded Qutb-ud-din Aibak (1206-11) which is further followed by Razia (1236-40) and Balban (1265-85). Qutb-ud-din Aibak laid the foundation of Qutub Minar but completed by Iltutmish.

Iltutmish, a slave of a slave is regarded by several historians as the real founder and consolidator of the slave Dynasty and the Delhi Sultanate. According to them, Aibak was the ruler for four years only.

The Mongol leader Genghis Khan came to the northwestern border of India during the reign of Iltutmish. Due to Genghis Khan's wrath, Jalaluddin Mangbarani, son of Khwarism Shah reached the Indus Valley. Probably Genghis Khan had sent his messengers to Iltutmish not to help Mangbarni, so Iltutmish did not help him.

Genghis Khan was a Mongol ruler who played an important role in the expansion of the Mongol Empire. Genghis Khan's real or early name was Temujin.

Iltutmish established a monarchical form of government and a governing class or nobility, known as Turkan-i-Chahalgani or Chalisa (a group of forty) which was the ruling elite of the period.

Shams ud-Din Kayumars was the son of Muiz ud-Din Qaiqabad, the eleventh sultan of the Mamluk dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate. His father Muiz ud din Qaiqabad is said to have been murdered by a Khalji noble, Jalal ud-Din Firuz Khalji.

Balban's policy of Blood and Iron: It is not without significance that out of about 84 year's rule of the Slave Dynasty, Balban's rule lasted for about 40 years i.e. 20 years as 'Naib' or Prime Minister but virtually the Sultan and 20 years as the Sultan of Delhi.

For his court, Balban made rules and enforced them strictly according to the court of a Sultan. His ideal in the region was the Iranian emperor and he introduced many of their traditions to his court. He started the rituals of Sijda (lying on the ground to greet) and Paibos (kissing the feet of the Sultan). He started the practice of celebrating the Persian festival 'Nauroz' with great fervor every year in his court.

- He was the wazir of the grandson of Iltutmish, Nasir-ud-din-Mahmud.

Sultan Balban's full name was Ghiyasuddin Balban. Balban took over the sultanate as sultan from 1266 to 1287 AD. He is also known as Ulugh Khan. His real name was Bahauddin. Like Iltutmish, he was also an Ilbari Turk.
