They said, “Mother, we are not hungry, we shall eat later.”

    Solutions

The given sentence is the direct narration of a simple sentence. Since it is the mother who is being responded here, so, we will change the reporting speech as "they told their mother". The tense of first phrase of the reported speech is simple present which will change to simple past in indirect speech. It means "we are not hungry" will change to "they were not hungry". Please note that the pronoun "they" is a third person pronoun, so it will not be changed and remain same in indirect speech. The part "we shall eat later" will change to "they would eat later". It is because, "we" is a first-person pronoun and it will change according to the subject of the reporting speech which is "they" here. So, "we" will also change to "they". Now, "shall" will change to "would" as it needs to be in accordance with the subject "they". Option A is correct as it adheres to the above rules correctly.

He said angrily to his brother, “Why don’t you do as you are told?”

    Solutions

The given sentence is the direct narration of an interrogative sentence. So, "said to" will change to "asked". The question word "why" will work as conjunction only and will add the reporting and reported speech in indirect narration. The remaining part of the reported speech will be made assertive, i.e. the verb will be kept after the subject. The tense of the reported speech is simple present, so, it will change to simple past in indirect speech. The pronoun "you" is a second person pronoun and it will change to "he" (according to the rule, the second-person pronoun changes according to the object of the reporting speech which is "his brother" in the sentence). Option C adheres to these rules, so, it is the correct answer.

Abdul said, “What a lovely morning for tennis”?

    Solutions

Sentences in which the reported speech starts with the phrases like "what a lovely, how beautiful, what a terrible etc" are called exclamatory sentence. While converting such sentences in indirect speech, such phrase change to "it was very" and then comes the remaining part. Following this rule, the reported speech of the given sentence will change to "it was a very lovely morning for tennis". Also, the reporting verb will change to "exclaimed". Dinesh said, “I want to eat a good mango one of these days."

    Solutions

Here, we can apply the elimination technique. We know that in the given sentence, the reporting verb is in past, so, the reported speech will be in past tense in the indirect speech. So, options A and C are eliminated as they use present tense. We also know that "these" will change to "those" in the indirect speech. So, option D is also eliminated as it uses "these". So, the correct answer is B.
