    What is the sum of the first 13 terms of an arithmetic progression if the 5th term is 1 and the 8th term is -17?

    Solutions

    5 = 1

    A+4d=1    (i)

    And

    s = - 17

    A+7d=-17       (ii)

    On solving (i) and (ii)

    A=25 and d=-6

    13 =  13/2[2 x 25 + (13-1)(-6)]
    = - 143

  • Question 2/10

    A fraction becomes 6/5 when 5 is added to its numerator and becomes 1/2 when 4 is added to its denominator. What will be the double value of the fraction?

    Solutions

     Let the fraction be x/y

    (x+5)/y=6/5

    5x+25=6y

    6y – 5x=25 (i)

    And

    x/(y+4)=1/2

    2x=y+4  (ii)

    Solving (i) and (ii)

    X=7 and y=10

    So value of double fraction is 7/5

    Solutions

     W=2/9 (X+Y)  ,   X+Y=9/2 W       so

     W+9/2 W=60500

    11W=60500×2W=rs.11000

    X=3/7 (W+Y)

    W+Y=7X/3

    X+7/3 X=60500

    X=rs18150
